02/09/2017STEAG Energy Services takes on operation and maintenance of wind and hydro plants in Brazil

Operation & Maintenance (O&M) for wind farms and hydro-electric power plants with a capacity of around 1100 MW // Assumption of all contracts with the Statkraft subsidiary ENEX // ENEX staff to be taken on by STEAG

Essen. STEAG Energy Services has achieved a further success on the Brazilian energy market: It is taking on all the operation and maintenance contracts for wind farms and hydro-electric power plants from ENEX, a Brazilian subsidiary of Norwegian Statkraft. Under the transaction, STEAG Energy Services is taking over those O&M contracts that Statkraft had concluded with third parties, while the Statkraft plants continue to be operated by Statkraft. The transaction overs eight O&M contracts (260 MW) for medium-sized and small hydro power plants and ten O&M contracts (849 MW) for wind farms. Around 80 employees are to be taken on by STEAG Energy Services do Brasil. The two parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Dr. Ralf Schiele, Chairman of the Board of Management of STEAG Energy Services GmbH, comments as follows: “This project is an excellent opportunity for SES to position itself in the growing business of wind and hydro power both in Brazil and also internationally. Up to now, SES has not been involved in the operation and maintenance of hydro power plants at all, and only selectively in O&M of wind farms.” With a share in the energy mix of around 65 percent, water is by far the paramount source of energy in Brazil. New plants are also being constructed, above all in the small and medium-sized range. Brazil is also a major growth market for wind projects. The wind turbine capacity in operation, under construction and in planning already accounts for 10.5 percent of the total Brazilian energy mix. The wind farm capacity in Brazil is expected to double within the foreseeable future.

By taking over the O&M contracts, STEAG Energy Services can significantly expand its service business in Brazil. In February 2016, STEAG Energy Services do Brasil Ltd. (SESBR) had already taken on the operation and maintenance of a gas processing plant for Parnaiba Gas Natural S.A. (PGN).

STEAG Energy Services is highly successful in the operation and maintenance of power plants in many countries across the globe. It operates power plants in Spain, South America, Africa and India. With the services now provided on the Brazilian market, STEAG Energy Services operates more than 5000 MW internationally. Ulrich Sigel, member of the Board of Management of STEAG Energy Services, adds: “On the international scene in particular, we are known as an efficient service provider in the field of operation and maintenance. With our technical expertise, we develop and contribute to solutions for future-proof energy supplies both nationally and internationally.”
