STEAG Power Minerals and Hawar Group found a Joint Venture in Qatar


Roads, buildings, airport terminals and entire underground railway networks: the construction industry in the Gulf region is enjoying a tangible upswing. Extensive infrastructure projects are planned, and the football World Cup in Qatar in 2022 is also contributing to this development. Wherever there is a large amount of rapid building, high-quality construction materials are important. A market with good prospects for STEAG Power Minerals GmbH, which is consistently pursuing its internationalization strategy and now also exporting to the Gulf region with the new joint venture “Hawar Power Minerals” based in Doha, Qatar.

“Hawar Power Minerals” was founded on July 1 when the contracts were signed in Doha. The joint venture brings together STEAG Power Minerals GmbH with the Hawar Group, a long-established and influential family business in Qatar and throughout the Gulf region. “The new company combines the know-how in the marketing of power plant by-products which we have acquired over decades and our technical expertise with the outstanding regional network and market knowledge of our partner from Doha,” explains Andreas Hugot, Managing Director of STEAG Power Minerals GmbH.

The task now is to attract orders and give the company a personality. To do that, Jochen Pfitzner, Head of International Sales Worldwide at STEAG Power Minerals, will move into his new office in Doha as General Manager of Hawar Power Minerals in September. “The necessary structures will be established in the coming months. The aim is for Hawar Power Minerals to operate autonomously in the region with its own resources as soon as possible.” The fly ash is to be imported to the Gulf region from nearby India. There are many hard coal power plants in India, producing large quantities of fly ash. Further power plants are under construction. The majority of the valuable byproducts are, however, not as yet used.

Fly ash has many favorable properties from which the construction industry, and especially that in hot regions like the Gulf, can benefit. “We will aim our range of products and services above all at suppliers of cement and concrete, but also at construction companies involved in the major building projects,” Pfitzner adds. The marketing of blasting abrasives, other mineral products and raw materials is also envisaged.
